Upwork Fee Calculator — Your Real Take-Home Pay

Upwork moved to a flat 10% service fee in 2023, simplifying things compared to their old tiered system. But you still face currency conversion losses, withdrawal fees, and potential Plus or Business subscription costs. This calculator shows your real bank deposit amount.

How Upwork fees actually work

Upwork's 2026 fee structure is cleaner than most freelance platforms, but Connects, subscriptions, and withdrawal fees can still chip away at your take-home.

Service fees

  • 10% flat service fee on all freelancer earnings (replaced the old 5/10/20% tiers)
  • No reduction for long-term clients — same 10% from order one through order one thousand
  • Clients also pay a 3% payment-processing fee on top, but that does not affect your take-home

Connects and memberships (optional)

  • Connects cost $0.15 each and are required to send proposals
  • Plus membership: $14.99 per month for extra Connects and visibility
  • Business membership: $49.99 per month for advanced features

Withdrawal options

  • Direct to US bank in USD: free
  • Direct to local bank (non-US): $0.99 fixed
  • PayPal: $1.99 fixed
  • Wise: roughly 1% on the conversion
  • Instant Pay: $2 fixed (faster clearance)
Real-world example

A $1000 fixed-price project means $900 after the 10% Upwork fee. If you withdraw to a US bank, you keep all $900. If you withdraw via PayPal to India, the 5 to 6% FX spread costs another ~$50, leaving you with roughly ₹71,000 instead of the ₹85,500 mid-market value.

How to calculate your real Upwork profit

  1. 1

Enter the project amount (hourly × hours or fixed price) in USD.

  2. 2

Pick your country in the header — taxes and display currency follow.

  3. 3

Pick your withdrawal method. The banner shows the real spread for your country.

  4. 4

If you outsource any portion, add the outsource cost in Step 2.

  5. 5

Read the breakdown: Order → Upwork 10% fee → Bank receives → minus any outsource costs → Net profit.

6 tips to maximize Upwork earnings

  • 1Long-term clients still cost the same 10% (Upwork removed loyalty discounts in 2023)
  • 2Direct US bank withdrawal is free vs PayPal $1.99 — save the fee on every withdrawal
  • 3Set up Wise for India / UK / Australia — saves 4 to 5% on conversion vs PayPal
  • 4Track Connects spending separately — active bidders spend $30 to $50 per month
  • 5Avoid Instant Pay unless you need money same-day ($2 fee per withdrawal)
  • 6Upwork sends 1099-K tax forms to US freelancers earning $5000 or more annually
